memory

(look)

between the branches
of sunlight
i saw the clouds melt
into dust

(listen)

i heard your voice on the other end
of the line
words that made my eyes close tight

(feel)

i moved through the maples
past the blue ash
my feet leaving behind the broken entrails
of wood nettles
and bellflowers

(Fraxinus quadrangulata)

tall, such a noble stature
heart wrapped in corked layers
toothed leaves filling in my view
of the afternoon sun

it burns my heart
to think that
such a tiny creature could bring you
(a majestic pillar in this dancing woods)

to your knees

The Thomas Woods

winter is so very near
(i can almost feel her breath on my neck)
and i wondering
how deep does your snow get?
will i be able to dance
over your frozen spine
and trace my steps
through your long shadows?
and if when spring comes,
will your silent voice
burst into song once more?
your leaves fall upon my upturned mouth
(full of questions)
gently reminding me of your mysteries that lie ahead
and memories of the seasons past

American Elm

the rubbing of your trunk in the wind
like a sigh of a creaking door
in an abandoned house
your dead carcass gives the illusion
of sprawling limbs
gaping wounds of rotting bones
and flesh
jungle gyms of trees once so tall and erect
now a balance beam for my sneakers
